What is epoxy flooring?

An epoxy floor is a mixture of resin and hardener applied to a concrete slab. It creates a smooth, solid surface resistant to water, oil, abrasion and many chemicals.

Originally used in industrial environments, its aesthetic and practical qualities have made it a popular choice for homes. Today, it’s a popular choice for garages, basements and kitchens.

Why choose epoxy flooring?

This type of cladding is prized for its many practical and aesthetic advantages. It is suitable for both residential and commercial applications.

  • Resistant to impact, chemicals and abrasives

  • Seamless, easy-to-clean surface

  • Wide variety of colors and patterns

  • Completely waterproof (perfect for basements)

  • Gloss or matt finish to taste

Epoxy flooring in the garage: a good investment?

Yes, especially if you’re looking for a floor that’s resistant to oil, water, salt and abrasion. Epoxy is ideal for protecting a concrete slab, improving aesthetics and facilitating maintenance. A minimum thickness of 2 mm is recommended for optimum durability, with the addition of anti-slip additives for added safety.

The different types of epoxy flooring

When it comes to choosing the right product for your epoxy floor, it’s best to opt for a quality product that guarantees a stronger, longer-lasting surface.

Products used by professionals generally contain between 90% and 100% solids by volume. Lower-quality products contain only 30% to 40% solids by volume.

As a result, the surface will be thinner and offer far less lasting protection than professional products.

Clear epoxy flooring

Transparent and glossy, it protects concrete while leaving its texture visible. Ideal for a minimalist effect.

Opaque epoxy

Available in several colors, it offers a uniform finish. Perfect for modern kitchens or basements.

Metallic epoxy

Mixed with pearlescent pigments, it creates deep, marbled effects. Highly appreciated for stylized spaces.

Anti-slip epoxy

Add aluminum oxide or sand to prevent slippery surfaces. Recommended for garages and kitchens.

Tip

Aluminum oxide can be added to the top coat to make the epoxy floor less slippery. Grit size can be adjusted to suit the room's use.

For opaque epoxy, several shades are available, from white epoxy to yellow, green, blue, red, grey and black.

Metallic epoxy shades are much richer and more nuanced, and it’s easy to see why they’re a little more expensive.

Epoxy garage floor - What are the advantages?

Epoxy on your garage floor will act as a protective layer for your original floor, whether concrete or metal.

Epoxy is impervious to water, but also to oil and gasoline. This means your garage’s epoxy floor won’t get stained if you’re used to doing maintenance work on your vehicles. It is also resistant to chemical splashes.

Thanks to the seamless finish, dirt won’t be able to embed itself in the floor’s cracks. The surface is easy to clean with a simple degreasing cleaner.

If your garage is your favorite place for heavy-duty work, your epoxy floor won’t be damaged any time soon, since it has excellent abrasion resistance.

In this case, you’ll need to ensure that the epoxy is at least 2 mm thick. Indeed, if the epoxy surface is thinner than 2 mm, it will only be a coating and will not be as resistant.

The thicker the epoxy surface, the more resistant your floor will be.

Epoxy or polyurea flooring: what's the difference?

You’ll be able to get a floor to suit your tastes, since epoxy is customizable. You’ll be able to choose from a huge selection of colors, and if it’s a commercial garage, you can even have your logo integrated, or add a design you like.

Although often compared, epoxy and polyurea have distinct properties. Epoxy is more affordable, offers a nice smooth finish, but takes longer to dry. Polyurea is more expensive, but also more resistant to abrasion and temperature variations, and dries very quickly. For a garage exposed to Quebec winters, polyurea is often preferred.

Epoxy kitchen flooring - For an easy-to-clean kitchen

If you’re tired of seeing your old ceramic tiles in your kitchen, you should know that it’s possible to install epoxy without having to remove the old tiles. All you have to do is seal the joints and make sure the floor is level, then the epoxy can be applied.

Your new epoxy kitchen floor will be much easier to cleanIt’s seamless, so there’s no dirt to track in. Soap and water will do the trick. You won’t need to use special products to restore the original color of your ceramic joints, or scrub them for hours.

Another advantage of epoxy flooring in the kitchen is its impermeability. Mold and mildew won’t grow on it, because epoxy flooring is completely waterproof.

As epoxy is a flexible material, it won’t be damaged if you drop pans. Nor will it be stained if you spill oil, even hot oil, as it is resistant to such spills.

In terms of aesthetics, you can choose from several colors and patterns, depending on whether you want a plain kitchen floor or one that stands out from the crowd. You could opt for a solid color or metallic colors that will give your floor a unique depth.

You can also choose between a matte or gloss finish (as in the image above), depending on the finish you want to achieve.

Basement epoxy flooring - The ideal surface for young and old alike

Basements are often gathering places for the whole family. You want a hard-wearing floor that will last a long time. Epoxy flooring is ideal for the basement playroom and living room.

It is much less fragile than floating floor and will last much longer. Your children won’t scratch it easily, even after hours and hours of playing with their little cars.

Here are just a few of the advantages of an epoxy basement floor:

Thanks to its easy-to-clean surface, you’ll save time on family room maintenance.

Epoxy’swaterproofing properties make it the perfect material for basements, which are often wetter than upstairs rooms. As a result, mold and mildew won’t grow there, unlike on a carpeted floor.

The floor will be more comfortable than a concrete floor, which can get very cold in winter.

Since epoxy is highly customizable, you can choose from a plethora of colors and patterns to make your basement unique.

What are the main steps involved in epoxy coating your floor?

1 – Clean the concrete floor

Before applying the coating, the concrete must be thoroughly cleaned. Using a scraper, wire brush or stiff bristle brush, remove all dirt, wax, dust, mildew and debris. Scrub with a strong detergent in lukewarm water to remove grease, waxes and oils. Allow the surface to dry completely before rinsing.

Tip: You can use a pressure washer. However, to avoid damaging the concrete, don’t use too much pressure. Concrete is like a sponge – it retains residual moisture after cleaning and pressure washing and affects epoxy curing.

2 – Apply muriatic acid to your concrete floor

Acid washing opens the pores in the concrete to ensure a strong bond between the new coating and its surface. Before you start, make sure you have eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves. You must have removed all dirt, grease and impurities with a detergent solution.

Make sure the surface is damp. Then use a stiff bristle brush to scrape the surface, and make sure it remains damp throughout. If you’re painting a garage floor, pay particular attention to areas where cars park. Keep rinsing as you scrub to make sure all contaminants are removed.

It’s better to work on smaller sections than to try to do everything at once. The surface should have a textured feel, like that of medium-grit pumice, to increase the adhesion of the epoxy. Allow surfaces to dry completely before applying paint.

3 – Prepare the room for painting

Use a cement-based compound to seal all holes and cracks. Make sure the repair is smooth. Once repaired, allow sufficient time for the area to dry completely.

Caution: Chipped paint should be scraped off and removed. Mold and mildew must be removed with a product that is safe for painted surfaces.

4 – Mixing and applying the epoxy coating

Before applying the first coat, be sure to follow these guidelines:

Please note: drying times may be longer in conditions of high humidity and cold.
